Kissing the Blarney Stone, Cork

Charlesfort, Cork

St Patrick's Bridge, Cork

Kinsale Harbour
|
Cork,
Ireland's second largest city, has a population of about 186,000.
The name comes from the Irish, corcach, meaning "marshy
place". The
River Lee flows through Cork, an island in the river forming
part of the city's centre. The Lee flows into
Lough Mahon, then into
Cork Harbour, one of the world's largest natural harbours. Cork
is a major seaport with quays and docks along the waterway of the
Lee.
Cork and the nearby port of Cobh
(Queenstown) has many attractions including the
Cobh Heritage
Centre which tells the story of the 2.5 million emigrants who
left Ireland between 1848 and 1950 through the port of Cobh. The
Everyman
Palace Theatre has a reputation for showing the best of modern
Irish drama and the Cork Jazz Festival, usually held in October,
attracts international talent.
Cork has many pubs and restaurants,
although possibly the finest dining is to be had in nearby
Kinsale, a
major sailing centre and arguably the most sophisticated and
fashionable resort in Ireland. Kinsale offers
yachting and
sea
angling, Dolphin &
Whale Watching Trips,
gourmet
restaurants,
golf -
and the chance to do a little celebrity watching as a surprising
number of the international glitterati have holiday homes here.
Cork is an ideal centre from which
to tour the south west and Atlantic coasts of Ireland. For the less
adventurous, just eight miles from Cork is
Blarney Castle and its famous Blarney stone. Kiss it and you're
guaranteed luck, or so they say!
